Atlantique

Fire Island

Community Moderate confidence

Founding & origin

  • Founded 1912 by Carlton Brewster and Dr. George King (Skylark/Bay Shore community column, Aug 23 2022). PARTIAL — this 1912/Brewster–King claim appears only in a promotional local column and is not yet confirmed against Town of Islip or historical-society records. Treat as a lead, not a fact.
  • Name note / likely family thread: The Brewster name also founds neighboring Lonelyville — Harry M. Brewster built “Brewster’s Bungalow” there in 1908 and coined the name “Lonelyville” (see Research). A Carlton Brewster founding Atlantique four years later, one hamlet east, strongly suggests a Bay Shore Brewster-family through-line across the two settlements. SPECULATIVE / UNVERIFIED but worth a Brooklyn Daily Eagle / Bay Shore directory check.
  • The strip west of the hamlet, Sea Fire Beach, was acquired by the Town of Islip as a public recreational facility and renamed Atlantique Beach (later Atlantique Town Beach and Marina). Acquisition date not pinned — GAP.

Governance

  • Unincorporated hamlet within the Town of Islip (not a NY incorporated village, unlike Saltaire or Ocean Beach). No local mayor/board of its own; civic authority is the Town of Islip plus the Fire Island National Seashore (community sits inside the FINS boundary as a developed-community exception).
  • The Atlantique Town Beach & Marina (150 slips) is operated directly by Town of Islip Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs — a rare case of a municipal facility being the social heart of a Fire Island community.

Deep history

  • Atlantique’s identity has always been boating-first rather than cottage-first. The column frames it as “a beach-bum boaters’ paradise … one of the best places for the serious boating enthusiast,” a summer haven for “generations of boaters, residents, and day-trippers.”
  • The 150-slip marina and its snack bar, “The Shack,” are “the heart of the community” — hosting music, food, bingo, cards, and local bands. This public-facing, day-tripper-friendly character distinguishes Atlantique from the deliberately private hamlets flanking it (Robbins Rest, Lonelyville, Summer Club).
  • Dual access: ferry from Bay Shore, or a walk east from Field 5 at Robert Moses State Park — the latter making Atlantique one of the few car-adjacent-reachable western communities, reinforcing its day-use flavor.

Key people & families

  • Cherveny family — VERIFIED. Cherveny Family: Mark Cherveny grew up in Atlantique (profiled in NYT 1992 at age 9; now Brentwood Fire 3rd Division). Cherveny Real Estate is the dominant brokerage for Atlantique/Lonelyville/Robbins Rest/Kismet (Pat Cherveny, broker since 1986). Cherveny listed/sold the Feb 2025 oceanfront sale below.
  • Ronnie / Ronald Fusia — OFF-RECORD. Listed in Off Record Names as an Atlantique figure (possible criminal record per project owner’s recollection); no public web footprint.
  • Carlton Brewster, Dr. George King — PARTIAL, founders per the single 2022 column only.

NARA records

No item-level NARA record is catalogued for “Atlantique” specifically (it is too small/recent for federal item-level description). The hamlet is reachable only through place/series records for Fire Island as a whole:

  • 183510570 · Fire Island National Seashore — FIIS — “The Story of Fire Island” · FIIS records (NPS) · unrestricted, digitized.
  • 183510571 / 183510572 / 183510573 · Proposed Fire Island National Seashore + Appendix + Supplementary Report · FIIS · the 1960s seashore-authorization studies that inventory every developed community including Atlantique.
  • 5835823 · 1940 Census Enumeration District Maps — New York — Suffolk County — ED 52-1… · RG 29/58 cartographic · the ED map that geolocates the western Fire Island hamlets; the 1940 & 1950 population schedules (name-indexed via NARA partners) are the route to early Atlantique households.
  • 75322102 / 75325195 · Fire Island Light Station (NRHP + boundary increase) · context for the barrier-beach federal presence.
  • Method: API GET /api/v2/records/search?q=… with header x-api-key + browser User-Agent; real naId is at _source.record.naId (NOT controlGroup.naId, which is the record-group id). Atlantique names will surface in census (RG 29) and Town of Islip records, not the free full-text catalog.

Money & real estate (values · who buys · source/year)

  • 775 Casino Walk, Atlantique (oceanfront) — sold Feb 4, 2025 for $1,200,000, Cherveny Real Estate (Fire Island News, Off-Season ‘24–‘25 top sellers).
  • 50 E End Walk, Atlantique — $2,097,000, status “Closed Oct 21, 2025” (OneKey MLS; unclear whether this is list or sale price — verify).
  • Buyer profile: a mix of multigenerational boating families (slip-holders) and oceanfront second-home buyers; Cherveny is the repeat broker. Values sit just under the Fire-Island-wide 2025 average sale price of ~$1.42M (see Property Value Data 2026).

Culture & character (barefoot vs Mercedes read)

Strongly barefoot, with a public twist. Atlantique is the least precious of the west-central hamlets — a working marina, snack-shack bingo nights, day-trippers walking in from Robert Moses, kids on the docks. It is boats-and-beer, not glass-and-steel. The “Mercedes” register that touches Lonelyville (Meier houses, R/GA founder) is almost absent here; Atlantique’s status marker is a boat slip, not an architect. The Town-owned marina keeps it democratic and slightly rougher-edged than its private neighbors.

Four-layer notes (time / water / earth / sky)

  • Time: 1912 founding (unconfirmed) → Town acquisition of Sea Fire Beach → marina-centered present. A hamlet that chose the public dock over the private dune.
  • Water: The defining layer. Bayside marina, 150 slips, Great South Bay as the front yard. Identity is literally afloat.
  • Earth: One of the narrowest cross-sections of Fire Island — ocean and bay nearly touch; dune-guided walkways; minimal buildable depth. The thin-land geography caps growth.
  • Sky: Open, low, day-trip light; the public beach and marina keep sightlines unwalled compared with the hedged private hamlets east and west.
