Fishers Island

North Fork, Long Island

Community Verified

Founding & origin

  • A geographic and legal paradox: part of the Town of Southold and New York State, yet lying 2 miles off the Connecticut shore and only reachable by ferry from New London, CT. (Claimed by CT historically; settled as a NY possession.) [HIGH]
  • 17th-c. European use was as grazing/farm land (hence “Fishers”); for most of its history a single-ownership agricultural island before the late-19th-c. resort development. [MEDIUM]

Governance

  • Within the Town of Southold, Suffolk County, NY. The town contracts with the Fishers Island Ferry District to run Elizabeth Field airport and to manage town-owned structures that were part of Fort Wright. [HIGH — Wikipedia]
  • Famously self-contained and private: the community controls access and land tightly; the eastern end is held by the Fishers Island Club and private estates, the western end is the year-round service hub (school, stores, airstrip, ferry). [HIGH]

Deep history — the two Fishers Islands

1. The Ferguson development (the private enclave). The E.W. & W. Ferguson interests built the island into a resort: the Mansion House Hotel and Cottages, the ferry, and the island’s electricity, water, and telephone utilities. The business was renamed Fishers Island Farms (1918) and the Fishers Island Utility Company (1965). The eastern-end development — the Fishers Island Club golf course (praised by President Eisenhower) and the Hay Harbor Club — made it one of the most exclusive WASP summer colonies in the Northeast. [HIGH — Wikipedia; Ferguson Museum]

2. Fort H.G. Wright (the military island).

  • 1898: the Fergusons sold 216 acres on the western end to the federal government (purchase April 1898) to build coast defenses. [HIGH]
  • Established 1900 at the island’s western tip as part of the Endicott Program of coastal fortification. Named for Union Gen. Horatio G. Wright (former Chief of Engineers, born Clinton, CT). [HIGH — NY DMNA]
  • 1910: became headquarters of the Coast Defenses (later Harbor Defenses) of Long Island Sound — the command node for a network that included Fort Terry (Plum Island), Fort Michie (Great Gull Island), and Fort Mansfield (RI), guarding the eastern approach to the Sound and the submarine base at New London. [HIGH]
  • Active through WWII (a Harbor Entrance Control Post operated here — NARA naId 190729881); placed on inactive status 1949; most property sold at auction August 15, 1958 (the auction was held in the fort’s movie theater). GSA disposed of ~297 acres. [HIGH — Ferguson Museum]
  • Today: buildings repurposed (one gun emplacement is now part of the island’s compost station); the fort’s land folded into town/private hands and the ferry-district airport (Elizabeth Field). [HIGH]

Adjacent military ground — Plum Island / Fort Terry (just west, in Plum Gut): site of Fort Terry (NARA naId 137929702, Reservation Map of Fort Terry), later the Plum Island Animal Disease Center (USDA/DHS; NARA naIds 404792105–115, USDA photo series). Part of the same Long Island Sound defense complex Fort Wright commanded.

Native ground

Fishers Island lay in the Manhanset (also Manhansack) island world — the Native sphere of Shelter Island, Gardiners, Plum, and the eastern Sound islands, distinct from the Corchaug of the North Fork mainland. See ../../../native/manhanset. The mainland Fork opposite was Corchaug ground — see ../../../native/corchaug. The island’s position in Fishers Island Sound also placed it at the edge of Pequot/Eastern Niantic (southern New England) territory, reflecting its geographic tug between NY and CT.

Key people & families

  • The Ferguson family (E.W. & W. Ferguson) — the dynasty that built, owned, and utility-fied the island; their name survives in the Henry L. Ferguson Museum (island natural-history/history museum). [HIGH]
  • Gen. Horatio G. Wright — Civil War general, Chief of Engineers, namesake of the fort (though he had no personal tie to the island). [HIGH]
  • The Fishers Island Club / Big Club membership = the old-line Northeastern families who make this one of the most private enclaves in the US.

  • Method: the term “Fort H.G. Wright Fishers Island” is the single highest-value query (4,038 hits; the HECP muster roll naId 190729881 and the Fort Wright barracks fileUnit 561221533 are at the top). For Plum Island, query “Plum Island Animal Disease” and “Fort Terry Plum Island” separately — different record groups (USDA photos vs Army engineer maps).

Money & real estate (Fishers Island = its own ultra-prime market)

⚠️ Fishers Island is a separate, thinly-traded ultra-exclusive market — standard median tools are unreliable because almost nothing trades, and most property transfers happen privately within the club/family network.

  • Zillow (ZIP 06390): median sale price $679,500 (as of Sep 30, 2025); median list price $738,997 (Oct 31, 2025). [LOW-MEDIUM confidence — tiny sample]
  • ATTOM: median home value $1,862,000, but explicitly thin — only ~4 residential sales in the trailing year, 3 in 2025. [volatility flagged]
  • Redfin: showed a $1.8M sale price off 1 home sold — not a usable median.
  • ⚠️ Do not confuse with Fisher Island, Florida (ZIP 33109, off Miami Beach), the nation’s most expensive ZIP (~$9.5M median 2025) — a completely different place that dominates “Fisher Island” searches. [critical disambiguation]
  • Reality: true transaction values for island estates run well into the multi-millions, but public medians understate and distort because of the near-total privacy of the market and single-digit annual sales. Report the figure with its date AND the tiny-sample caveat every time.
  • Who buys: essentially nobody new — membership-gated, multi-generational WASP families; access to the Fishers Island Club is the real asset, not the MLS price.

Culture & character

  • One of the most exclusive private summer enclaves in America — deliberately hard to reach (ferry from New London, CT, not from New York), access-controlled, and socially gated through the Fishers Island Club.
  • Year-round population ~424 (2020 census); summer swells to a reported ~2,000 (unsourced on Wikipedia); ~80% of the island’s 554 homes are seasonal. Year-rounders cluster on the western end (school, stores, airstrip). [HIGH on census; MEDIUM on summer figure]
  • A single PK–12 school (Fishers Island Union Free School District, 19 Greenwood Rd) serving ~68 students, 5:1 ratio; 2014 per-pupil spending $36,811 — a telling marker of the enclave’s resources. [HIGH]
  • 2000-census income (only figures Wikipedia gives): median household $50,521, median family $59,583 — NOTE these understate the true wealth because they capture the small year-round service population, not the seasonal estate owners. [data caveat flagged]
  • Identity = “an old-money island that happens to be in New York but lives off Connecticut” — the enclave counterpoint to the public, democratic North Fork.

Four-layer notes (time/water/earth/sky)

  • Time: grazing island → Ferguson resort (late 1800s) → Fort Wright (1900–1958) → preserved private enclave. Two overlaid histories: the club and the fort.
  • Water: the dominant layer — surrounded, reachable only by water/air, guarding the eastern mouth of Long Island Sound; the fort existed because of the water approaches (New London sub base).
  • Earth: eastern-end estates and golf links (Olmsted-era resort landscaping; the Fishers Island Club course); western-end gun emplacements now dissolving into town use.
  • Sky: Elizabeth Field airstrip (the enclave’s private air link); dark, remote Sound skies; the HECP once watched this airspace for the Sound defenses.
