Suzy Goldhirsch

Deep Profile

Investigation

President, Fire Island Association Verified continuously in role since at least Aug 2014 (Fire Island Chronicle); Vice President as early as Oct 2007 (NPS Summary Report); active FIA institutional voice from 2012 (post-Sandy) through May 2026

The “is she also a doctor?” question — answered

No. The Fire Island Suzy Goldhirsch and the Mount Sinai Suzanne Goldhirsch are two different people.

There is a Suzanne Goldhirsch, MA, MSEd at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. She is:

  • Program Coordinator, Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine (Brookdale Department)
  • Patient advocate, editor, and project coordinator for the Lilian and Benjamin Hertzberg Palliative Care Institute
  • Co-author of Geriatric Palliative Care: A Practical Guide for Clinicians (Oxford University Press, 2014; Emily Chai, Diane Meier, Jane Morris, Suzanne Goldhirsch, eds.)
  • ORCID 0000-0002-6314-8956
  • 11 research works, 58 citations on ResearchGate
  • Affiliated with Mount Sinai since 1997

She holds an MA + MSEd — not an MD or PhD. She is not a physician. She is a senior administrative/program-coordinator figure embedded in a medical school department, supporting the clinical and research work of MD faculty (Emily Chai, Diane Meier, R. Sean Morrison, etc.).

However, this Suzanne Goldhirsch is not the FIA president. Across 30+ news articles, NPS documents, BOEM testimonies, Suffolk County Legislature minutes, and FIA website posts dating back to 2007, the Fire Island figure is consistently named “Suzy” (never “Suzanne”) and never has any medical, palliative-care, or Mount Sinai affiliation cited next to her name. The two Suzys appear to share a first name and surname only.

If you specifically wondered whether the FIA leader has medical credentials: she does not appear to. She is identified in every primary-source document only as “President, Fire Island Association.”

What she actually does — in her own framing

From her January 2024 Stony Brook Media Showcase interview, in her own words:

“Of the 17 communities on Fire Island, all except one have erosion control districts. And in that one community, Cherry Grove, they are currently forming an erosion control district. And I was instrumental in starting the erosion control districts in the hamlet of Seaview.”

This is the most personal-history detail she has ever publicly stated. She came up through Seaview, not the Pines or Cherry Grove or Ocean Beach. Seaview is a small unincorporated hamlet between Ocean Beach and Ocean Bay Park, falling under Town of Islip jurisdiction. It’s quieter, more residential, less famous than its neighbors — and in 2023 it was the subject of the Seaview Association v. Town of Islip zoning case at the New York Appellate Division. Goldhirsch’s home community is functionally the structural connector between the more famous Fire Island enclaves.

The “erosion control district” mechanism she pioneered in Seaview is the legal-financial backbone of all subsequent Fire Island beach-funding work. It’s a New York State special-tax-district structure that lets a defined geographic group of homeowners self-impose property tax surcharges to fund a specific public benefit (in this case, beach renourishment). Once Seaview proved the model worked, the other 15 communities adopted it. Cherry Grove is now the last holdout, currently forming theirs (per her Jan 2024 statement).

So her actual operating contribution is not just “longtime FIA president.” It is:

  1. Pioneering the erosion-control-district legal mechanism in Seaview
  2. Replicating it across the 17 Fire Island communities
  3. Using the aggregated 17-community special-district capacity as the political/financial muscle to negotiate with the Army Corps, NY State DEC, FINS, and the federal Congress
  4. Acting as continuous spokesperson at every level — Suffolk County Legislature, NY State Assembly, BOEM, federal Army Corps proceedings

She is, in effect, the mechanism-builder behind the post-Sandy Fire Island shoreline-funding architecture. The $1.7B FIMP authorization rests directly on the erosion-control-district structure she helped create.

Her relationship to the founding myth

She was a panelist alongside Susan and Cathy Barbash at the August 3, 2015 NPS 50th anniversary panel at the Bay Shore-Brightwaters Public Library. The exhibit (“Protecting a Ribbon of Sand: The Creation of Fire Island National Seashore”) was curated by Susan and Cathy Barbash and held at the Fire Island Lighthouse Fresnel Lens Building.

This is the public moment where the founding generation (the Barbash daughters representing Maurice’s legacy) and the operating generation (Goldhirsch as president) shared a stage. She is the institutional successor. When the Barbash family donated the Citizens’ Committee Collection to Stony Brook in September 2024 (60th anniversary), the donation was implicitly handing the historical custody role to the next generation — and Goldhirsch’s FIA is the institutional inheritor.

She is also explicitly aligned with the National Park Service. Her 2023 and 2024 letters to Fire Island residents are co-signed with Chris Soller, FINS Superintendent. That co-signing pattern is significant: Goldhirsch has positioned the FIA as a partner with the federal park service, not an adversary, even when their interests diverge (as they do on the renourishment-vs-let-nature-take-its-course question).

Where she lives, what she may do

Public sources do not state her primary residence (NYC vs Fire Island year-round) or her professional background outside FIA work. The only personal-biography detail in the public record is:

  • She lives or has historically been deeply active in Seaview, Fire Island
  • She has been doing this work for “decades” (her own framing, Jan 2024)
  • She was already FIA Vice President by 2007, suggesting she joined the board no later than the early 2000s

The NYT 2014 article references her in a “Quogue, N.Y.” context (the dateline of the article, not her residence). The other articles place her at FIA meetings on Fire Island and at Suffolk County / NY State proceedings.

There is no public LinkedIn, no published professional biography beyond her FIA role, no Wikipedia entry, no campaign donor record I surfaced, no business affiliation. This is consistent with a homeowner-activist who built her public identity entirely through the FIA work itself rather than transferring an external professional reputation into the role. (Contrast with Maurice Barbash, who was publicly identified as a homebuilder, and Irving Like, who was publicly identified as a lawyer — both came in with external professional identities. Goldhirsch’s identity is the FIA itself.)

Summary judgment

Suzy Goldhirsch is not a doctor. She is the operating CEO of the Fire Island homeowner movement, a 19+ year continuous institutional figure, the architect of the erosion-control-district financing mechanism that made the post-Sandy $1.7B FIMP funding possible, and the bridge between the 1962-64 Barbash/Like founding generation and the climate-change-era 2026 generation. Her public identity is unusually thin outside the FIA role — she is one of those rare public figures whose entire identity in the documentary record IS the institutional role itself, with no externally-imported professional credential or business profile detectable in two hours of deep search.

She is the JFK-Sanctuary-equivalent figure for the next generation: where Oyster Bay’s 1925 Save Our Beaches Committee held title against Moses, Goldhirsch’s FIA holds the legal-financial mechanism (erosion control districts + 17-community coalition) against the next set of threats — climate, sea level, FEMA withdrawal, and offshore wind visual impact. Same role, three generations apart.
